Which Yamaha engines can have a NIZPRO Performance Tune?

Nizpro has developed ECU Reflashes for the following YAMAHA OUTBOARDS –

  • L4 1.0L  Offshore F50 – F70
  • L4 1.8L  Offshore F75 – F130
  • L4 2.7L  Offshore F150 Mech
  • L4 2.8L  Offshore F150 – F200
  • V6 4.2L  Offshore F225 – F300

  • L4 1.8L   VMax SHO VF90 – VF115
  • L4 2.8L   VMax SHO VF150 – VF175
  • V6 4.2L   VMax SHO VF200 – VF250

What does it mean to flash an outboard engine? What does an ECU Flash do?

Nizpro Tuning is all about refining an already great product, the yamaha range of outboards.

If you are looking for more performance, improved throttle response or better fuel efficiency, an ECU flash can improve all these without the expense of repowering your boat.
A Nizpro Yamaha ECU Remap will provide a range of benefits including increased power, improved drivability from sharper throttle response.
With a Nizpro ECU tune you can also expect your fuel economy and fuel efficiency improve.

When we started our Nizpro Supercharger program in the early 2000’s we choose Yamaha Outboards as we believe they are the best built outboard engine on the market, and we still do 10 years later.

At no point do we attempt to push the engine to breaking point! (that would be a BAD business model!), and we wouldn’t be here all these years later!

We do NOT tune to the limits of the engine, we optimise the existing performance, without impacting reliability.

ECU Flashing is the process by whereby your outboard ECU can be re-programmed to in order to reach the maximum performance of the engine.

An ECU Flash can help maximize your outboard engine performance by:

Increasing horsepower by improving fuel and timing maps. Improving throttle responsiveness.

All NIZPRO tunes are first developed on our inhouse dyno cell and then we complete testing on the water.

Why you should flash your ECU

  • No need to re-rig your boat which costs $1,000s
  • Additional hp, no extra weight
  • Additional torque, no extra weight
  • Improved fuel economy, from lower RPM

Is reliability and durability compromised in any way by adding a Nizpro 450s Supercharger to a naturally aspirated engine?

The Yamaha V6 4.2L is an extremely well engineered product.

In its highest production level (300HP), it makes a mere 71hp per litre at 6,000 rpm maximum engine speed.

The standard Yamaha V6 4.2L is also engineered with high quality connecting rods, oil cooled pistons and a compression ratio low enough to be the perfect platform for forced induction (supercharging).

During our own durability testing program, Nizpro tested well beyond the 450hp power level using higher rpm and substantially higher boost pressures to ensure no compromise to the Yamaha V6 4.2L reliability and durability. Of course, routine and regular scheduled maintenance must be carried out to maintain overall outboard integrity and peak performance.

Is my standard lower unit strong enough to handle the hp upgrade?

ABSOLUTELY!
The standard Yamaha lower unit is both strong and durable.

That’s why we chose Yamaha when we commenced developing high performance products for marine outboards.

Nizpro Marine recommends regular scheduled maintenance and high quality lubricants to ensure long term reliability.

Correct fuel octane is also critical.

RACING ONLY

If the engine has been Supercharged and is used for racing, Nizpro recommends upgrading to a Nizpro Marine Solid Engine Mount Kit.

We also offer a hand built, heavy duty lower unit with fat shaft, heavy duty bearing carrier and even bespoke nose cones for race applications.

This is not required for recreational use.

World class production and manufacturing partners deliver a world class product.

From the initial design concept of the Nizpro 450s supercharger package for the Yamaha VMax SHO and Offshore 4.2 litre V6 engine, Nizpro chose to partner with Harrop Engineering and Eaton Corporation.
Harrop, renowned for their world class product design and production capabilities and Eaton Corporation to utilise their leading TVS Supercharger Technology.

Nizpro knew that working in partnership with the best OEM partners would ensure outstanding product performance & reliability and now 8 years later, that has proven to be exactly the case.

Fuel Requirements

Nizpro recommend the best quality fuel for all Yamaha engines to optimise performance and all of our performance products are developed on 98 Australian RON.

The Nizpro 450s Supercharger requires the following fuel for maximum performance:

  • Recommended fuel – 91 USA pump octane or 98 Australian RON octane
  •  Minimum fuel – 89 USA pump octane or 95 Australian RON octane.
  • Note that maximum power output may not be achieved when running lower rated fuels

Why Recalibrating/Tuning development must be performed on a marine dyno.

Thinking of reflashing your engine, but heard horror stories at the boat ramp of engine failures?

The Nizpro Marine Testing Facility is at the core of why of NIZPRO tunes produce high performance gains without compromising engine reliability or longevity.

Our goal – Optimise engine performance to –
1. Improve the overall performance adding HP and torque, and adjusting rpm limits to broaden power delivery curves
2. A focus on improved fuel efficiency at cruising rpms
3. Give a greater torque spread and maximise throttle response

Nizpro Marine Tunes are developed exclusively on our state-of-the-art Vertical Inhouse Marine Dyno which enables us to data log and recalibrate the complete tuning map, something that cannot be done accurately when on the water.

A number of reasons why on-water tuning (only) makes it impossible to achieve reliable results – and why we use a static dyno cell.

On the water, you do not have the range of input sensors available to provide real time results, which allow for adjustments and calibrations for climate including atmospheric pressure and temperature.
You can only calibrate to the atmospheric conditions on that day.
Tuners will normally try and listen to the engine to hear for spark knock. On water testing in a boat with boat & engine noise make it nearly impossible to hear and very inaccurate.c
Compare this to the engine working under every possible load, rpm and temperature condition that are adjustable on the dyno.

We are able to listen and monitor audible spark knock and monitor internal cylinder pressure by measuring cylinder pressure through multiple sensors on individual cylinders all at one time, thousands of times per second.

Speed and boat movement – try sitting in a boat, holding onto a laptop computer at 100 mph while dodging waves and other boats and you understand why a static dyno is so important.

Our state-of-the-art dyno also means we can log the 100’s of hours required to ensure that our tunes ensure the best performance possible.

What is knocking, and why you don’t want it!

Knocking (also knock, detonation, spark knock, pinging or pinking) in spark ignition, internal combustion engines occurs when the fuel-air charge in the cylinder combusts at the wrong time. The fuel-air charge is meant to be ignited by the spark plug only, and at a precise point in the piston’s stroke.

Knock occurs when the peak of the combustion process no longer occurs at the optimum moment for the four-stroke cycle.

The shock wave creates the characteristic metallic “pinging” sound, and cylinder pressure increases dramatically.

Effects of engine knocking can range from inconsequential to complete destruction.

Nizpro’s dyno tune development and stringent processes ensure that your engine will perform exactly as Yamaha designed it to.
